I hope you are fully prepared for what this Friday has to offer. Tonight is the official kick-off to yet another party weekend and there is a crap-ton (actual scientific unit of measurement) of stuff to be seen and heard this evening. So take a power nap if you must, eat some grub, do some stretches, and get ready to Friday like you’ve never Fridayed before.
The king of retro-soul makes his way to the stage of Port City Music Hall tonight. Mayer Hawthorne & The County will be bringing back the good old days with their throwback sounds for a modern age alongside special guests The Stepkids. This is another show brought to you by Lauren Wayne and The State Theatre so if you’re into awesome tunes and good times, you’ll probably wanna check it out starting at 8 o’clock tonight.
And speaking of The State Theatre, local rockers Sidecar Radio debut as a ferocious four-piece this evening as they open up for national act Seether. This is the first time the fellas play as a foursome now that they’ve added guitar virtuoso Walt Craven to the fold. Things get started right around 7 tonight at the majestic and mighty State.
More in the way of rocking and rolling tonight over at Geno’s Rock Club in Portland (how appropriate). Tonight local space rockers Armstrong will take the stage alongside Connecticut doom rockers Bedroom Rehab Corporation and Portland’s almighty Pigboat. The roof starts shaking right around 9 tonight.
The Free Press and the University of Southern Maine Philosophy Symposium present HELLVetica a night of free press, free thought, and free music at the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland. From 8 o’clock on you can check out music from local acts Huak, Mouth Washington, Heavy Breathing, and Whip Hands.
Dirigo, which features members of Strangefolk, returns to The Big Easy in Portland tonight with Soule Monde. Soule Monde is a deep-funk improv outfit made up of Russ Lawton and Ray Paczowsky of the Trey Anastasio Band. So if you’re looking to get your groove on, I’d suggest getting your can over to The Big Easy for 9 tonight.
The first edition of Friction Fridays takes place tonight over at Flask Lounge in Portland. Tonight you can bust a move to all things dub step, garage, jungle and straight up bass-based as every third Friday of the month DJ Frydae will be bringing the friction right around 9.
If you’re way up north this evening you can check out how the country folk do 4/20 at Unity College in Unity, Maine as The Mallett Brothers Band takes the stage alongside Waylon Speed this evening starting at 9pm.
It’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to witness Sposein action, so I will most definitely be spending the majority of my evening helping him to celebrate the release of his latest studio album, The Audacity! over at Empire Dine and Dance in Portland tonight. It’s pretty incredible that a dude from Wells, Maine who hasn’t had any major label support is currently ranking as one of the Top 10 Hip Hop Artists on iTunes right now. I think that’s definitely something to celebrate and he’s doing it doubly tonight with an all ages show at 5 and then another at 9 for the 21+ crowd. Tonight Sly Chi will serve as Spose’s backing band and there’ll be a plethora of special guests from Cam Groves to Educated Advocates, Lady Essence, Rapper Ashley and more.
