Taking Tuesday By Storm

I hope you found some time to soak up a little Vitamin D yesterday because it looks like it’s rubbah boots weather once again.  Luckily Tuesday provides us with some sunny spaces to check out some good tunes courtesy of some good people all around town, so tuck those Party Pants into your galoshes, raise your umbrella high and get ready to get down on it this evening.

If you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary this evening then tonight’s show over at SPACE Gallery in Portland might be exactly what you’re looking for.  A trio of interesting avant-rock acts will be taking the stage at SPACE right around 8 o’clock.  You’ll be able to check out the lo-fi rock n’ roll of Dirty Beaches alongside Italian trio Father Murphy and the experimental pop-rock songs of California’s Xui Xui.

Looking to get your DJ on this evening?  Then check out Drop It: Open Tables Night over at Flask Lounge in Portland.  Starting at 9, you can sign up for a DJ slot on some open decks, all you need to bring are some records, CDs, and a pair of headphones.  Tonight The Psychologist will be on hand to spin some house trance music to kick things off as well as offer support to any first time DJs.  It’s free, so swing on by and check it out.

I think I love Tuesday nights most because they always seem to smack of a certain kind of free-ness, so if you’re like me, here’s a few other things you can check out tonight on the cheap.  Every Tuesday over at Local 188 the fantastically funky and equally ferocious Jaw Gems get down with a set of tunes starting at 10pm.  This four-piece brings the good times by creating pleasing sounds that include everything from jazz to funk to soul to hip-hop and pretty much everything in between.  There’s never a cover charge so if you’re looking for some fresh, fun action tonight, check it out.

More in the way of free jazz, fun and funk is takes place over at Empire Dine and Dance in Portland where the Chas Lester Quartet will be laying it down starting at 9 o’clock tonight.  Each and every Tuesday these gents get together and deliver a straight shot of jazz, funk and soul for absolutely free downstairs at The Empire.

And another freebie to check out tonight is over at Slainte Wine Bar & Loungewhere DJ Ponyfarm presents another entertainment-filled evening of karaoke.  That’s right, if you’re looking to belt it out and be your own rock star, you can do just that with absolutely no cover charge starting right around 9 tonight.

Tonight marks another installment of the Out of the Blue music contest series takes place over at Blue on Congress Street tonight.  Starting at 7 o’clock, 15 to 20 musicians have 2 songs (or 10 minutes) to perform original music in front of an audience of peers and one unknown guest judge.  Once everyone has had a chance to do their thing, there’ll be a short break and the guest judge will then determine three finalists to advance to the next round of the competition.  Those three finalists will then perform one more song each before a winner of the whole shebang is decided.  The prize for the Out of the Blue contest is a lump sum of some cold, hard cash. Boo-yah.

I’ll be playing the part of hostess with the mostest (wow, yup, sorry about that one) over at The Big Easy once again this evening for another edition of Cover to Cover.  Tonight the fiercely talented T.C. Foxx brings her original band Stereocom to the stage to perform Adele’s Grammy award winning album 21 in its entirety.  T.C. and Stereocom will be joined by a few special guests throughout the evening to get the job done and will kick things off right with a set of funky R&B originals starting right around 9 tonight.  So come sing along to the songs you’ve been hearing non-stop for the past year and half as well as enjoy some live, local originals.

Drop some knowledge.
