Surf’s up, dude! Or whatever surfers would say. With summer slowly winding down and a noticeable lack of tourists around, I say it is high time for you to make a run for the beach and try your hand at surfing. While Maine is not usually regarded as a surfer’s paradise, we do offer a good amount of surfable beaches. From Wells, to Higgin’s, to Old Orchard Beach.
If you are already an avid surfer, then go grab your wetsuit, board, and go hit up your favorite location. As for the rest of you, grabbing a board and hitting the surf might just be hazardous to your health. As with any sport, proper training and equipment is a must. Luckily for you kids, I have a few places to recommend for you.
Maine is blessed with having several long sandy beaches which make learning to surf easier than you think. The swells never get higher than 3-5 feet. This makes for easier riding with long left-to-right swells that will help you on your board longer. As for the inevitable wipeout, the beaches are sandy and quite forgiving. Just as with snowboarding, you are going to fall. A lot. So get used to this fact. Oh yeah, and this just in: the water is friggin’ cold. So if you don’t have much in the way of blubber, then go out and get yourself a wetsuit.
So stop just hanging out at the beach and learn something new this weekend. Honestly, how many people in the state can even say that they have ever been surfing? Cowabunga brah!

Drop some knowledge.
