Saturday Night Shakedown

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but I’m pretty certain I drank all of the vodka in Portland last evening.  It was cold and Friday and heck, someone had to do it, right?  Therefore, you’re welcome.  I kid, but I did have an enjoyable evening despite the wicked weather and I’m hoping you all did too and that you’re prepared to do it all over again this evening.  Saturday night is shaping up quite nicely, so let’s give ‘er the run down, shall we?

If you’re down in the Biddeford, Maine area this evening, you should check out a great show happening over at The Oak and The Ax on Main Street.  Tonight two tremendous singer-songwriters will be taking the stage for a night of truly tantalizing tunes. (Alliteration is awesome, but I digress…)  Massachusetts native, Dan Blakeslee, joins Portland’s roots troubadour, Samuel James, for a night of enrapturing story telling by way of guitar.  Things get started around 8pm.

The Big Easy in Portland continues its Saturday Night Soul, Jazz and Funk Series this evening with Portland’s own jazz-funk poet and vocalist Lady Zen.  If you’ve ever seen Lady Zen perform, you know that she is in a category all of her own.  Between her spoken word and undeniable singing voice, she is an entertainer on stage that you cannot take your eyes off of.  This evening she presents a catalogue of new work that she’s been crafting over the past few months as well as her regular repertoire of jazz standards.  Joining her on stage this evening will be Scott Morgan, Duane Edwards and Dan Capaldi.  Tonight’s edition of Saturday Night Soul, Jazz and Funk begins at 8 o’clock.

A roaring night of ruckus rock and roll takes over Geno’s in Portland this evening.  Tonight four local acts ranging from punk rock to rootsy blues-rock to metal promise to bring the thunder.  Hitting the stage hard will be Two Forty Gordy, Big Meat Hammer, 13 High and The Boffs. Get ready to throw your fists in the air and rock it on out tonight starting at 9.

If you’re looking for a little Saturday night pre-game action, why not make your way up Munjoy Hill in Portland where bluesman, Lex Jones, will be playing at Mama’s Crowbar this afternoon?  Lex will be playing a variety of the finest blues classics this afternoon starting around 4 o’clock.

Frontier Café in Brunswick features two bright singer-songwriters this evening as Connor Garvey and Rob Cimitile’s Builder of the House take the stage this evening beginning at 8pm.

Local fan favorites and Portland rock veterans, Rustic Overtones, play a gig at The Stone Church in Newmarket, NH tonight.  New Hampshire’s psychedelic, garage rock outfit, The Ghost Dinner Band, open up the night at 9 o’clock.

Drop some knowledge.
