If you’re looking to do something a little outside the box this week, head to Geno’s Rock Club in Portland this Thursday, January 17th around 8pm for Coast City Comics‘ and Taco Escobarr‘s presentation of GLOW: The Story of Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Not privvy to the lady wrestling film niche? Well then boy are you in for a treat. As you can imagine, the film “chronicles the rise and fall of this once successful television show through the stories of those who lived it. From the initial open-call auditions, to the grueling training with wrestling legend Mando Guerrero, to over-night success and global recognition, to the show’s sudden and unexpected cancellation in 1990, the GLOW girls recall their time on the show with a mixture of heartfelt nostalgia and tearful regret over injuries and the loss of friends,” according to the film’s website.
As if the film screening weren’t enough to amp you up, the whole event is a nonstop thrill ride for the ladies wrestling fan within: appearances and performances by Super Lucha Explosiva, and Superhero Lady Armwrestlers of Portland (SLAP). And just a heads up, you may want to hit the gym the next couple of days as the audience is invited to arm wrestle the lady arm wrestlers (who of course, will be donning their finest superhero duds). For the scrawnier fans, don’t fret; they’ll also be plenty of photo ops with Super Lucha Explosiva. Just think of the Christmas card potential.
The doors open at 7:00, film starts at 8:00, and the cover is only $5. Can’t beat that.
