Dean Levasseur

As Roots, Rhythm & Dub geared up for their set at this year’s Chickenfest music festival in Howland, they couldn’t seem to locate their guitar player, Dean Levasseur. He was seen shortly before their 11PM set on Saturday night, but did not show up for the performance. His guitar was left on stage, and failed to respond to an announcement made by state police over the PA system.

The festival, which is attended by hundreds of students from the University of Maine (Orono campus), is held at a secret location every year and got its name from the BBQ chicken that is grilled during the event.

A search team was quickly formed on Facebook by family and friends to find Dean, and although he was reported missing in his hometown of Freeport, police and the search team will be focusing their efforts on the Howland area.

His cell phone signal was last picked up on Monday by a tower in neighboring town LaGrange. Police say the phone could be within a ten mile radius of that tower, which is a daunting search area to cover.

Levasseur is described as 5′ 6″ tall, and 145 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen smoking behind the bandstand at Chickenfest, wearing a green jacket and blue jeans. If you see Dean or know of his whereabouts, please do not hesitate to contact the Freeport police.

UPDATE (4/25/2012, 10:00AM): Sgt. Ronald Dunham of the Maine Warden Service said over 40 volunteers, including family and friends, searched for Dean on Tuesday until 6:30pm, and plan to make a big push today, focusing on the area just west of the Chickenfest site. No clues have been found yet, but friends and family are still adamant and not giving up the search.

UPDATE (4/25/2012, 11:20AM): The body of Freeport musician Dean Levasseur was just found in the woods by a search team of police officials, friends, and family. Our deepest condolences go out to the friends and family of Dean. The Maine music community lost a talented member today. A press conference will be held at 11:30AM to discuss what little details have been discovered thus far. For more information, please read this article.

UPDATE (4/26/2012, 2:09PM): After the autopsy, the death was ruled a suicide. Again, our strongest condolences go out to everyone that knew Dean.
