Ah yes, Thursday, the day of the week where you know you’ve almost completely made it. It’s a beautiful thing really and I’ve found in my time of being able to go out and enjoy adult beverages paired with live music that Thursdays generally never disappoint. So throw all caution to the wind and get down on it this evening.
There are a few of the typical Thursday night happenings for you to take into account as you make some plans this evening starting with the Jerks of Grass over at Bayside Bowl in Portland. Every Thursday night the Jerks come together and make some traditional, good-time bluegrass music starting at 8:30. There’s never a cover charge and the night always consists of the Three Bs: beers, bluegrass, and bowling, check it out.
If you’re thinking of hitting up the Old Port this Thursday evening you can check out a double dose of jams over at The Big Easy as Band Beyond Description and Miz bring the jams, hula-hoops, and tie-dye starting around 9 o’clock.
If you’re looking to do some rocking and/or rolling tonight with a side of everything from The Grateful Dead to Stevie Wonder, Charlie Daniels, The Beatles and everything in between, then you should probably scoot your pooch over to Gritty’s on Fore Street in Portland for another Thursday night with Velourosaurus. It’s always free and always a helluva time so check ‘em out starting right around 9:30.
I’ve been hearing a lot of great things about Griffin Sherry & The Ghost of Paul Revere and if I weren’t going out of town to see the one and only Nick Lowe this evening, then I would surely be at these gents show over at The Dogfish Bar & Grille. These guys have a certain knack for all things indie-folk and are most definitely on to something. Check ‘em out for yourself starting at 7 o’clock tonight.
Local musician Brian Patricks will be playing a set over at Andy’s Old Port Pub in Portland this evening. Starting at 7 you can hear Brian perform a handful of his own original tunes alongside some classics that everyone knows and loves.
A Robot Booking and Promotions presents an evening chock full of progressive alternative rock from a trio of local bands over at Geno’s Rock Club this evening. Starting at 9 you can check out sets by Whale Oil, Chaos Sauce and Asexual.
A pretty sweet and definitely unique show takes place over at Blue on Congres Street in Portland tonight where Samuel James and D. Gross present The Ultimate Song Trade Off. How it works is an audience member is urged to request a song, then either Samuel or D. will play that song and whichever of the two is up next to play will then have to choose a song that is clearly derivative of the song that was just played. Follow me? Ha, my explanation is a bit messy, but trust me, this sounds exceptionally entertaining. Things get started right around 10 o’clock tonight.
And the Preposterously Dank crew bring things a bit north tonight as Spose, Educated Advocates and Cam Groves bring the thunder to the University of Maine Farmington. A full evening of hip-hop ruckus will begin right around 10 o’clock.
