Girl Talk and Delicate Steve at the State Theatre

Perhaps it was the mysterious star-shaped tablet I was handed before entering the State Theatre Thursday night that led my mind astray, but I’d be hard pressed to correctly identify the name of a single ‘Girl Talk’ song. Sure, there’s the one that loops ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ with that other song, or the one that quotes ‘War Pigs’ before making a u-turn into that other song with that other band, but after 90 minutes of non-stop sampling, everything begins to sound like one giant remix of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ featuring cameo appearances from every hip-hop artist to ever spit lyrical fire from 1995 onward. Luckily, that makes for one hell of a party. In fact, the only real comparison I can make to attending a Girl Talk show would be to simultaneously listen to your iPod on shuffle while your car radio randomly seeks from classic rock to country as Wile E. Coyote unleashes a barrage of unlicensed ACME weaponry upon you from all angles. At times, it can be a lot to take in, but there’s something about the sheer insanity of it all that’s strangely appealing. Whatever it is, it makes the kids dance, even if Gregg Gillis is just playing Minesweeper half the time.
