The summer weather is quickly making way for fall and I don’t know about you, but this crisper air gets me all riled up for arguably the best holiday of the year: Halloween. While Halloween signifies costumes and candy to some, for me it’s all about the horror movie marathons which have become a fundamental social gathering among my group of friends thoughout October. I’ve always been a bit of an odd child. When I was four my brother “accidentally” ripped my favorite doll’s head off by wedging it in, then yanking it from, the spokes of my bicycle. While most children would be horrified of the decapitated dolly, I, inspired by Wednesday Addams, carried my beloved Baby Debbie around, body in one hand, head in the other, for the better part of a year. Perhaps The Addams Family isn’t exactly a “horror” movie, but the point is, I’ve always been drawn to the macabre. So I was thrilled to hear about Coast City Comics’ Horror Icons: October’s First Friday Showing.
Here’s where you come in: Portland is filled with artists. And Coast City wants your art. So get to it and create some creepy horror icon-themed works for this First Friday event. You can use any type of medium you want, they only ask you bring your work ready to hang. Whether you’re into Leatherface, Freddy, Jason, or Jack Torrance, it’s all good as long as it’s horror. Though I’d recommend you feature my first childhood crush, Scream‘s Billy Loomis.
I told you I was a weird little kid.
Submissions are due Thursday, October 4th–the day before First Friday. If you have any questions regarding the exhibit, please contact chad@coastcitycomics.net.
