1. Portland Stage Company

Being Maine’s largest fully professional, non-profit theatre is a tough title to acquire. The company produces dozens of full scale productions, operates out of two spaces (a 288-seat proscenium theatre and a 70-seat Studio Theatre), and manages a number of festivals and programs throughout the year. Portland Stage has been the nurturing grounds for some of the greatest productions, playwrights, and artists from Maine in the last 30 years.

2. Freeport Factory Stage

One of Maine’s newest venues for live theatre, Freeport Factory sits in the heart of Freeport and is one of the few with a year-round season. The stage is a 90-seat black box theatre that produces everything from original plays and musicals to popular full-length dramas and comedies. It’s a must-attend for the truest of theatre-goers who like their shows to be a bit more intimate.

3. Penobscot Theatre Company

The northeastern-most point in Maine is not the most populous region in America. Consequently, Penobscot Theatre Company is a gem of live theatre in the Bangor region that is alive with artistic creativity. Making their home in the Bangor Opera House, this company produces half a dozen full-scale productions between August and May. To put it simply, if you’re willing to take the trip out to eastern Maine, a show at PTC will be an unforgettable experience.

4. Schaeffer Theatre (at Bates College)

Bates College has one of the United States’ top undergraduate programs for theatre arts. You can see their (frequently) award- winning productions year-round. 5. Acadia Repertory Theatre

The Maine Coast contains dozens of theatre, dance and opera companies that provide quality entertainment for vacationers and locals alike. Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park is one of the most famous vacation destinations in the state. So why shouldn’t it also be home to great theatre? Acadia Repertory Theatre makes its home in the intimate 148-seat theatre of Masonic Hall. 6. Ogunquit Playhouse

“America’s Foremost Summer Theatre.” Founded in 1933, Ogunquit Playhouse is one of the oldest summer theatres in America. Their seasons begin in May and produce some of the best musical theatre in Maine.
