1. Merrill Auditorium

This 1900 seat performing arts facility is located in the arts district in downtown Portland. Not to be bogged down by any one genre, the Merrill is host to everything from classical music to comedy. They cultivate the dance community as well; The Maine State Ballet performs several times a year at this venue, and they’ve opened their doors to dance companies of varying nations and styles.

2. Maine State Ballet Theatre

As of 2007, The Maine State Ballet finally has a performance space of their own. The intimate new theater has a 50 foot stage and seating for an audience of 115. While the ballet company still travels, they are thrilled to have this lovely little theatre to call home. While this theatre is definitely the place to see The Maine State Ballet, they often share the performance space with others, renting it out to performing arts organizations throughout Maine.

3. Gracie Theatre (at Husson College)

After opening in 2009, the Gracie quickly moved beyond being a “college performance space” only, and became one of the more prominent performance spaces in the Greater Bangor area. Providing space for a wide variety of events, they present dance pieces regularly (particularly from the Bangor Ballet) in this 500-seat theatre.

4. Camden Opera House

Home of the Camden International Film Festival, this theatre seats 495 and hosts both local and national dance performances. Set to the backdrop of beautiful Midcoast Maine, a visit to this historic venue is particularly delightful in the summer. If you can stand the long lines, grab a famous lobster roll at Wiscasset’s Red’s Eats on your way to the show.

5. Westbrook Performing Arts Center

This brand new performance space seats 1000 people and is conveniently located in downtown Portland. This state of the art space, much like the Merrill, is open to a variety of performances from Circa to ballet.
