Calculating The Fun Into Thursday’s Equation

Today’s post will begin with a reference to an extremely ridiculous song from the early 2000s, here we go:  I know my calculus, it’s you plus Thursday equals fabulous.  Phew.  I feel much better now. Sometimes I just have to get these awkwardly unfunny things off of my chest before I get down to the real nitty gritty.  With that being said, here are the haps for this Thursday evening

I’m gonna start things over at Flask Lounge on Spring Street in Portland where a night of folky pop music will be taking place.  Beginning at 7 you can check out sets from the acoustic rock trio The New Nicolette as well as Virginia’s The Anatomy of Frank and Portland’s own lo-fi punk folk act The Availables.

Over at Empire Dine and Dance in Portland the rock and roll music machine known as The Running Gags are set to rock your socks off with a free show upstairs.  There’ll be tons of tunes everyone knows and loves as well as some cuts off the guys recently released album Yeah, No.  Things get cranking right around 8 tonight.

Former Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten returns to Portland this evening for a killer show over at The Big Easy in Portland.   Tonight Constanten will take the stage alongside Lazy Lightning and Band Beyond Description and rumor has it that a ton of special guests will also be on hand to jam the night away.  Things get started right around 9 tonight.

If you’re looking to enjoy some unique tunes that cover everything from funk to jazz to a little bit of rock and roll, then head on over to The Dogfish Bar & Grille on Free Street in Portland for a free set from The Trickle Down.  The Trickle Down are five players from right around Portland with an eclectic musical background that create a veritable melting pot of musical sounds that’ll be kicking into high gear right around 9 o’clock tonight.

Self-proclaimed great time experts DJs Matt Brown, Xander Karkruff and Jenny Santomauro bring the dance party over to Slainte Wine Bar & Lounge in Portland tonight.  Beginning at 9 you can enjoy a free full evening of soul, garage rock and girl groups as the trio present the Night Beat Dance Party.  It’s free so bust out those Party Pants and cut a rug this evening.

Geno’s gears up for an evening of eclectic entertainment brought to you by the one and only BeardCore tonight.  Champion wordsmith Brzowski will be hosting tonight’s event as well as performing an abbreviated set alongside electro rockers Every Other Country, Portland punks Whale Oil, female punk powerhouses Doll Parts and LA’s beatsmith and progressive rap emcee k-the-i??? Go show some love tonight starting at 9 and while you’re getting all lovey dovey, check out Brzo’s video for I’m The Atlantic; good stuff all around.

More along the lines of progressive-electro-dance-party music is happening over at Port City Music Hall as California’s Beats Antique takes the stage tonight.  Things get underway right around 8 with an opening set courtesy of DJ Laura.

And I can’t forget the typical Thursday night happenings that are going down all around town tonight.  First up is the Jerks of Grass over at Bayside Bowl in Portland.  Every Thursday night the Jerks come together and make some traditional, good-time bluegrass music starting at 8:30.  There’s never a cover charge and the night always consists of the Three Bs: beers, bluegrass, and bowling, check it out.

Another freebie that is always happening on Thursday evenings over at Brian Boru is North of Nashville.  This duo of gents get together every Thursday and fuse pop songs with a healthy dose and country and bluegrass for sounds that you’re sure to tap your foot to.  Things get started right around 9:30.

If busting a move and getting a little weird to some funky rock and roll jams is what you’re looking for then head over to Gritty’s in Portland where you can check out Velourosaurus.  Starting at 9:30 these fellas will be tearing it up with selections from The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Charlie Daniels, Cee Lo Green, and many, many more.  There’s never a cover charge and it’s always a terrific way to spend a Thirstday.

If you’re south of Portland tonight, grab a beer over at the Run of the Mill in Saco and check out some acoustic folk happenings courtesy of Brad Hooper and Old Soul.  It’s a free show that begins at 8 o’clock tonight.

The Dover Brickhouse in Dover Rock City continues its Thursday night acoustic music series with a free show from the B.A. Canning Duo.  Beginning at 8 you can check out half of the actual B.A. Canning band do their thing downstairs at The Brickhouse, anticipate lots of upright bass lines and proggy acoustic folk pop.

Drop some knowledge.
