Congrats to our friends at Allagash Brewing Company for being named one of the 20 Most Influential Beers of All Time by FirstWeFeast.com. The Maine microbrewing industry today is booming and we couldn’t be more thrilled to watch its progress first hand here in Portland (read more about microbrewing in Maine in our November 2012 issue).
Allagash really blazed the trail for some of today’s up-and-coming breweries and was one of the first American microbreweries to brew and market Belgian witbiers, you know, before it was cool. It’s hard to believe there was a time when the ever popular Allagash White was met with skepticism. In November, Head Brewer Jason Perkins told Dispatch some brewers accused Allagash’s cloudy witbier of being “infected” before the Belgian style was common in the marketplace. It’s great to see their flagship beer get the recognition it deserves. There’s a reason this beer is found on tap nearly everywhere in Portland (and beyond!); it’s a classic. Really, Joshua M. Bernstein stated it best when he said, “Allagash White is the beer Blue Moon wishes it could be.” Cheers to Allagash; I’ll certainly raise an Allagash White in your honor tonight.
