As Dispatch‘s resident creep and junk food fiend, it’s not surprising that Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. (Really though, I’ve always thought of Halloween as more of a state of mind than a holiday, which is why I created this boss Halloween playlist so I can jam out while I creep out.) Since I’ve been vegan as of late, most mainstream candy is off-limits. Thankfully, my appetite for the macabre is easily satiated as Maine’s got plenty of chilling events to keep my night light on well into November. Because I want to spread holiday fear, I’ve rounded up ten Halloween parties for your internet scouring pleasure. Want more? By all means, creep yourself out.
Alright, let’s get spooky:
1. John Carpenter’s 1978 Horror Masterpiece in HD! Halloween
345 Main Street // Rockland
Thursday, October 25th @ 7pm // $8.50 (All ages)
Want to watch a busty Jamie Lee Curtis get chased around by her psychopathic hockey mask-faced brother? Stupid question. It wouldn’t be Halloween if you didn’t enjoy this genre-defining classic.
2. Damnationland Screening
The Magic Lantern
9 Depot Street // Bridgton
Friday, October 26th @ 8pm // $6.50 (All Ages though Scary Material!)
Missed last weekend’s 2012 Damnationland world premiere in Portland? Oh, quit ya fussin’–there are several different screenings going on throughout the state. As we’ve previously asserted, this short horror film festival of Maine-made films is the best thing to happen to Halloween since the inception of pillow cases as candy bags.
3. Annual Halloween Goth Ball
121 Center Street // Portland
Friday, October 26th @ 9pm // $8 (21+)
Nothing quite gets you in the Halloween spirit like a night filled with Medieval-themed torture. Get your freaky little buns down to the Asylum and prepare for an evening of wicked torment…because sticks and stones may break my bones but lead sprinklers and knee splitters excite me.
4. Sid Tripp’s 16th Annual Halloween Bash
368 Fore Street // Portland
Saturday, October 27th @ 9pm // $20 (21+)
Sid Tripp’s Halloween party is one of Portland’s coolest and spookiest traditions. Get dressed in your best undead apparel and relish in this year’s Zombie theme.
5. Halloween Party with Rustic Overtones and The Mallett Brothers
9 Timberline Drive // Newry
Saturday, October 27th @ 9pm // $25 (21+)
If you’re up to the mountains this Hallow’s eve weekend, start a cult with Rustic and The Mallett Brothers at Phoenix’s huge Halloween blow-out. Don’t forget to don your ghastliest of costumes and keep in mind there’s more where this party comes from – it’s merely the kickoff to this season’s Black Bear Energy Music Series!
6. SPACE Halloween Party
538 Congress Street // Portland
Saturday, October 27th @ 8:30pm // $10 (21+)
SPACE knows how to throw a party and this year, they’ve managed to once again roundup one hell of a lineup of local artists. And, in great Halloween party fashion, they plan to finish the night off with a giant dance party. Featuring members of Haru Bangs and Mouth Washington as Fugazi, The Coalsack in Crux as The Gun Club, Sunset Hearts as Talking Heads and the return of Gabe FM on the decks!
*Got kids? No worries: SPACE has a kid-friendly spooky scavenger hunt party earlier in the day.
7. Halloween Havoc at Coast City Comics!
Coast City Comics
634 Congress Street // Portland
Wednesday, October 31st @ 10am-8pm // Free (All ages!)
Coast City Comics is throwing an all-day Halloween party so prepare to geek out. Exclusive Halloween giveaways, including Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more. Also, musical guests Uke Skywalker and Computer at Sea will be there to make geeky (and awesome) love to your ear drums. But what’s that? There’s also a costume contest? Best bust out your slickest superhero cape and get down there then! And artists Ben Bishop and Joe Schmalke will be doing live drawings for all you fine folks. Oh, one last thing: free snacks.
8. Halloween Freak Show featuring The Bearded Lady!
117 Spring Street // Portland
Wednesday, October 31st @ 6pm // Free (21+)
Get your freak on at Flask’s Freak Show. All you have to do is show up dressed as some kind of freak. Anything you want! If you don’t dress up, that’s OK. Though everyone there will totally judge you. Just kidding. They won’t judge you. But I will. Freak.
9. Teen Scream Massacre Ball
Geno’s Rock Club
625 Congress Street // Portland
Wednesday, October 31st @ 9pm // TBA (21+)
Here’s to hoping Billy Loomis shows up! The Teen Scream Massacre Ball features entertainment from Dirty White Hats, The HandMe Downs, Cam Groves, and Connor McGrath. The costume contest winner scores a prize pack containing merch from the bands and gift certificates to area businesses. If you can’t swing going out on a Wednesday night (lame), Geno’s is also hosting this PortSports Halloween party on Saturday, October 27th.
10. A Special Halloween Clash of the Titans: Thriller vs. Purple Rain
Empire Dine and Dance
575 Congress Street // Portland
Wednesday, October 31st @ 9pm // $6 (21+)
Halloween wouldn’t be right if you didn’t throw a little “Thriller” action in the mix. Celebrate Halloween with two of the best albums of all time…Prince’s Purple Rain and Michael Jackson’s Thriller! Also, dress to the spooky nines. If you need any makeup tips, just ask the evening’s resident Prince, Dean Ford.
